Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Mayckol Guaipe made his major league debut in 2015.

Guaipe was signed by Seattle Mariners scout Luis Martinez in October 2006. He was 1-0 with a 1.67 ERA in 15 games for the VSL Mariners in 2007, though his 1.41 WHIP was nearly as high as his ERA. He went 2-1 with 3 saves and a 1.86 ERA for the 2008 VSL Mariners, walking 19 in 38 2/3 IP but allowing only 26 hits. He fell to 2-2, 5.46 with two saves with the same club in 2009. Back for a fourth year, he went 4-2 with four saves and a 2.77 ERA in 2010. He came to the USA in 2011 with the Pulaski Mariners, going 5-6 with a 3.66 ERA. He was among the Appalachian League leaders in ERA (6th, between Tim Shibuya and Eduardo Hiraldo), wins (tied for 5th), losses (tied for 4th) and hit batsmen (12, 2nd).

In 2012, Guaipe pitched for the Everett AquaSox (6 R in 12 IP) and Clinton Lumber Kings (5-0, 3.39), missing some time with a back strain. He made his Venezuelan Winter League debut with the Caribes de Anzoategui but was unimpressive (20 H, 9 BB, 17 R in 16 1/3 IP, then 3 H and 1 R in 1 2/3 IP in the postseason). With the High Desert Mavericks in 2013, he went 3-4 with 5 saves and a 5.64 ERA, hitting 8 in 59 IP, though he did fan 57. He was 1-1 with a 7.40 ERA for the 2013-2014 Caribes but was sharp in the semifinals (2 R in 7 IP, 1-0). In the finals, he was in the center of a brawl in game 3 against the Navegantes del Magallanes. He served up a 6th-inning homer to Robinson Chirinos that made it 6-1 for the Navegantes; Chirinos stood a few seconds to admire his shot. When Ezequiel Carrera, the next batter, showed bunt on a 1-1 count, Guaipe hit him with a pitch. Guaipe, Chirinos and Carrera all got little media attention in the US for the ensuing brawl as the focus was on Carlos Zambrano of Magallanes, who charged from the dugout and took swings at lots of people. Many of the articles in the US didn't even mention Guaipe by name.
