Biographical Information[edit]
Matt Soren has pitched in the minors and for the Israeli national team.
Soren was 3-1 with a 5.06 ERA as a freshman at Delaware, then fell to 0-5, 16.95 (2.44 WHIP) in 2012. As a junior, he was 4-5 with a save and a 3.62 ERA. The Philadelphia Phillies took him in the 19th round of the 2013 amateur draft, two picks before Adam Engel. The signing scout was Paul Murphy. [1] He split the summer between the GCL Phillies (1-0, 3.12 in 6 G) and Williamsport Crosscutters (0-1, 6.91 in 8 G).
Let go by the Phillies, he moved on to the independent leagues. He was 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA in seven games for the 2014 New Jersey Jackals. In '15, he was with the Long Island Ducks (0-2, 6.17 in 12 G) and Washington Wild Things (0 R in 2 1/3 IP). Like some other Jewish Americans, he then got Israeli citizenship to play for the Israeli national team (a common tactic for the Italian and Greek teams among others over the years). In the 2019 B-Level European Championship, he got the start against Bulgaria and allowed only two hits and two walks in seven shutout innings, fanning seven, before Dean Pelman took over in an easy win. Israel won, the first step to their making the 2020 Olympics, but Soren did not remain with the team for their next events of the year or for the Olympics. [2]
Matt was back with Israel by the 2021 European Championship but did not appear for them as they won a Silver Medal, their first medal in an international baseball competition. [3]
