Biographical Information

Matt Magill made it to the majors in 2013.

Magill had a 2-2, 1.44 record as a high school senior. He was picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 31st round of the 2008 amateur draft; the scout was Chuck Crim. He had a commitment to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo before signing with the Dodgers. He went 1-2 with a save and a 3.34 ERA in his pro debut for the GCL Dodgers. With the 2009 Ogden Raptors, he went 6-3 with a 4.00 ERA. He tied Nick Bucci, Nelson Curry and Stephen Locke for second in the Pioneer League in wins, led in lowest average (.224) and was second to Matt Wickswat in ERA.

Magill showed good progress with the 2010 Great Lakes Loons at 7-4, 3.28 with 135 strikeouts in 126 1/3 IP. His .194 opponent average allowed was lowest in the Midwest League, he was 7th in ERA (between Nick Struck and Clayton Cook and he tied Jake Odorizzi for fifth in strikeouts. He led all minor leaguers in lowest average allowed (according to the 2011 Baseball Almanac; the 2013 Dodgers Media Guide lists him 8th, presumably with looser qualification standards). In the more hitter-friendly California League in 2011, he was 11-5 with a 4.33 ERA. He tied for 7th in the league in wins, ranked 10th in ERA and was 9th in strikeouts (126, between Jon Michael Redding and Tyler Skaggs).

Magill picked it up a notch in 2012 with the Chattanooga Lookouts (11-8, 3.75, 168 K in 146 1/3 IP). He allowed one run in six innings in the postseason but lost a 3-0 duel to James Paxton of the Jackson Generals. He tied for second in the Dodgers chain in wins, behind John Ely and led in whiffs, three more than Ely. He also tied Ethan Martin for second in walks (61). In the Southern League, he tied Josh Stinson for second in wins (three behind Struck), was 10th in ERA and easily led in strikeouts (39 ahead of runner-up Kyle Lobstein). Baseball America did not include him on their list of the league's top 20 prospects. He also did not make the SL All-Star team as Brandon Maurer was picked as the top righty. He was 4th in the affiliated minors in strikeouts, trailing only Dan Straily, Tony Cingrani and Adam Morgan.

Matt opened 2013 with the Albuquerque Isotopes and had four AAA games under his belt (0-0, 2.84, 23 K, 14 BB in 19 IP) before getting called up to the majors to replace the injured Stephen Fife as the Dodgers' staff was facing a slew of injured pitchers. He battled Wily Peralta well in a 6-4 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers, allowing four hits, two walks (both to Norichika Aoki) and two runs in 6 2/3 IP while fanning seven. Paco Rodriguez replaced him with a 3-2 deficit, two outs and none on in the 7th.

On December 2, 2014, he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds in return for OF Chris Heisey.
