Biographical Information

Matt Haas reached AA as a player then became a scout; his brother Danny Haas has also scouted. Additionally, his father Eddie Haas was a major leaguer, uncle Lou Haas and cousin Chris Haas were minor leaguers, and he is a more distant relative of many of the Roofs who have played pro ball.

Haas was selected by the Montréal Expos in the 25th round of the 1990 amateur draft. He went on to college at the University of Notre Dame and hit .353 his last year, 5th in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. The Expos chose him again, this time in the 41st round of the 1994 amateur draft. He made his pro debut as the main 1B for the 1994 Vermont Expos, hitting .272/.345/.318. With the 1995 Albany Polecats, his batting line fell to .235/.316/.277 while he backed up Bob Henley at catcher.

Alternating between catcher, first base and left field, Matt batted .266/.340/.324 in 77 games for the 1996 West Palm Beach Expos. In 1997, he wound down his playing career with West Palm Beach (.234/.317/.284 in 72 G) and the Harrisburg Senators (4 for 19, 4 BB, 2B, HR, 1 shutout IP).

Overall, Haas produced at a .251/.330/.304 rate in 258 minor league games, with 86 walks in 878 plate appearances, 86 runs and 81 RBI. He fielded .982 at 1B, .987 at C and .975 in the OF.

Haas has scouted for the Boston Red Sox (6 years), Arizona Diamondbacks (4 years), Florida Marlins (4 years) and Baltimore Orioles (2012- ). He signed Josh Collmenter, Collin Cowgill and Kevin Youkilis.
