Biographical Information[edit]
Matt Borgschulte played college ball at Western Kentucky University and Drury University while studying sports management. After graduation in 2013 he stayed at Drury for another year as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2014 season. He joined the Southeast Missouri State University Red Hawks in the same role for the 2015 season. After the season he spent his summer coaching the Wisconsin Woodchucks of the Northwoods League. Borgschulte then had a brief foray into coaching the Tusculum College Pioneers, but returned to SMSU in January 2016 to serve as the team's hitting coach.
In 2017 Borgschulte turned to coaching professional baseball in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He spent one year coaching the Palm Beach Cardinals before joining the Minnesota Twins player development staff. Borgschulte started 2018 as the GCL Twins hitting coach, but was promoted to manager of the team on July 25th. He reverted to being a hitting coach in 2019 with the Fort Myers Miracle. He was scheduled to coach Rochester Red Wings hitters in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. In his final season with the Twins organization Borgschulte was the hitting coach for the St. Paul Saints.
After almost a decade of coaching, Borgshulte reached the major leagues for the first time when the Baltimore Orioles hired him in 2022 as a co-hitting coach alongside Ryan Fuller. The tandem continued as co-hitting coaches through the 2024 season. In 2023 the hitters under their tutelage led the team to a a division crown. In addition, the duo mentored Adley Rutschman to a second place finish in the 2022 American League Rookie of the Year Award balloting and Gunnar Henderson who won the award in 2023.[1]
