Biographical Information[edit]
Mark Wagner played 9 seasons in the majors, for three teams, mostly as a utility infielder. He first came up with the Detroit Tigers in 1976, and stayed with them through 1980. His time with the team coincided with the arrival of the double play combination of SS Alan Trammell and 2B Lou Whitaker, which took away a lot of potential playing time. He was traded to the Texas Rangers in return for reliever Kevin Saucier before the 1981 season and stayed there until 1983. In his final season, in 1984, he was with the Oakland Athletics; his 83 games that year were the most of his career, but they were largely as a defensive replacement, as he obtained only 87 at-bats. He hit .243, but with few walks and very little power - his never hit more than a single home run in a season, and his high for doubles was 5, resulting in a career slugging percentage of just .299 in 415 games.
In 1989, he played for the West Palm Beach Tropics of the Senior Professional Baseball Association. He batted .301 in 42 games. In 1990, Wagner played for the Sun City Rays of the SPBA. He played in 17 games, batting .365 with 8 RBI before the league folded.
Wagner was a coach for the Toledo Mud Hens in 1991 and Chattanooga Lookouts in 1996-1998.
