Biographical Information

Mark Mueller was a minor league infielder for three years. His grandfather Walter Mueller and father Don Mueller both played in the majors while uncle Leroy Mueller played in the minors. Mark was born the day Don hit his 5th homer in a two-day period.

The St. Louis Cardinals took Mark in the 34th round of the 1971 amateur draft. The next infielder they took that year was Keith Hernandez in the 42nd round. Assigned to the GCL Cardinals, he was 11 for 64 with 2 doubles, a triple, 5 walks and 4 steals (without being caught). He split second base with two other players, one of whom was also the son of a major leaguer, Tom Zimmer. In 1972, Mueller played for the Cedar Rapids Cardinals (.246/ .358/.275 in 24 G) and Anderson Giants (.265/.342/.341 in 50 G). After fielding .989 at 2B in 1971, he was down to .895 for Cedar Rapids and .896 for Anderson in '72, lowest of any Midwest League or Western Carolinas League second sacker with 10+ games. In 1973, he moved to the New York Mets chain. He split time between the Batavia Trojans (.274/.356/.352 in 64 G) and Pompano Beach Mets (.242/.333/.288 in 29 G) to end his pro career. He fielded .925 as Batavia's main shortstop, better than future Gold Glove winner Robin Yount (.877 for Newark).
