The Marion Cubs started out their O-I league stand with a 62-78 record in 1948 putting them 20 1/2 games off the pace. Nick Alivojvodic, pitching for the Cubs , led the league by striking out 255 would be hitters. Lou Bekeza started out as the team's manager but was switched with Frank Kristie to finish up the season. The team finised in seventh place.

The 1949 season would see the team become affiliated with the Boston Red Sox and and be known as the Marion Red Sox.
