Biographical Information[edit]
Marilyn Jones broke into baseball as a light-hitting catcher for the Kenosha Comets, batting .040/~.127/.040 in 50 at-bats in 1948 and going 0 for 3 for the Fort Wayne Daisies a year later. Marilyn improved to .203/~.276/.203 in 69 AB for the Rockford Peaches in 1950 and then hit .173/~.263/.194 for Rockford and the Battle Creek Belles a year later.
Converted to pitching by Battle Creek in 1952, she became a star. On a 43-67 team, she had a winning record (9-7) and her 1.69 ERA was third in the AAGPBL, behind only Jean Faut and Gloria Cordes. The Belles moved the next year and became the Muskegon Belles. Still a last-place team (39-70-3), they again got a winning season from Jones (14-11, 2.56). She was tied for 8th in the league in wins, tied for 7th with 86 strikeouts and tied for sixth with 22 complete games.
Jones went back to Fort Worth in 1954, the final AAGPBL season. She went 8-8 with a 4.26 ERA but was still 7th in strikeouts (59). She won game two of the championships against the Kalamazoo Lassies to tie the series, but lost the deciding game 5 to June Peppas by an 8-5 score in the final game in the league's history.
Overall she went 31-26 in the regular season with a 2.31 career ERA. She allowed 415 hits in 577 innings, struck out 191 and walked 149.
