Biographical Information[edit]
Gloria Cordes was a pitcher in the last five years of the AAGPBL, primarily with the Kalamazoo Lassies. She began her career in 1950 with a 5-10 record and 3.63 ERA, walking 76 and striking out just 23 in 119 innings for the Racine Belles and Kalamazoo. The next season, for the Battle Creek Belles and Kalamazoo, she went 3-15 with a 3.52 ERA.
Her career improved drastically at age 20 in 1952 when Cordes had a 16-8, 1.44 season. She cut her walks from 96 to 52, increased her strikeouts from 70 to 84 and allowed 12 fewer hits (168 to 156) in 34 more innings (179 to 213). She was fifth in the league in innings, third in strikeouts, sixth in wins and second to Jean Faut in ERA.
In 1953, Gloria was 13-11, 1.98 and again among the leaders in ERA (third), strikeouts (106, 5th), complete games (20, tied for 8th), shutouts (6, second) and innings (218, 10th). In her last year, Cordes went 12-7 with a 4.58 ERA. She was 4th in strikeouts (86) and tied for fourth in victories. Overall, she was 49-51 during her career, with a 2.82 ERA. In the postseason, she went 1-4 with a 4.15 ERA.
She is also known as Gloria Cordes Elliott, her married name.
