Biographical Information[edit]

Marcel Vianna pitched several years in the minor leagues. At age 17, he pitched for the GCL Braves in 1998, going 3-4 with a save and a 2.49 ERA and striking out over a batter per inning. He allowed only 35 hits in 47 innings. He was injured in 1999-2000 then returned in 2001 with the DSL Braves, going 0-2 with a 3.32 ERA. In 2002, he went 3-0 with 2 saves and a 1.47 ERA for the Macon Braves, again striking out over a batter per inning. He allowed a .171 average. During 2003, he was 5-4 with a 2.94 ERA in relief for the Myrtle Beach Pelicans to conclude his Organized Baseball career. He held opponents to a .198 average his final season.

In the 2003 Baseball World Cup, Vianna was Brazil's worst hurler, allowing 7 hits, 6 walks, a hit batsmen and 2 wild pitches in only 2 1/3 innings, giving up 7 runs. His ERA was over double Brazil's next-worst pitcher, Marcio Sakane. In the 2005 Baseball World Cup, Marcel went 1-0 with a 6.00 ERA; in 9 innings, he fanned 11 and allowed 5 hits. He got the win over South Africa. He struggled in the 2006 Americas Olympic Qualifier, giving up 5 hits, 2 walks and 5 runs in 2 1/3 IP and posting the highest ERA on Brazil's staff. Opponents hit .500 against him.

Vianna pitched for the Long Beach Armada in 2007, going 2-2 with 3 saves and a 6.48 ERA. In the 2008 Americas Baseball Cup, he played right field and went 5 for 22 with 4 runs and 2 walks. He did not pitch. He was with Brazil when they got the Bronze in the 2011 South American Championship and Silver in the 2013 South American Championship and 2015 South American Championship.
