Biographical Information[edit]
Luis Lopez is the earliest of three players by that name who have played in the major leagues. He appeared in 6 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1990 and 35 with the Cleveland Indians in 1991.
Luis was born in Brooklyn, NY and came out of Lafayette High School as a 2nd round pick in the 1983 Amateur Draft. He worked his way up the Dodgers organization during 1984-1890. He did quite well in Albuquerque, posting an incredible line of .493/.524/.667 in 84 at-bats in 1989 with the Albuquerque Dukes, and then coming back the next year to hit .353/.417/.487 in 128 games with the same team. He made his major league debut with the Dodgers in September of that year.
He was, however, released by the Dodgers in December of 1990 and signed in January by the Indians. Back in AAA ball with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, he hit .347/.388/.472 in 41 games with the team, and found himself back in the majors for 35 games with the Indians. After that, he was in the minors of the Cleveland organization again in 1992-1995, except for 1994 which he spent with the Richmond Braves of the Atlanta Braves organization.
From 1996-2004 he played ball in Japan (parts of six seasons) and also did some independent ball with the Somerset Patriots (parts of four seasons).
"Man, it is great over there." - Louis Lopez, interviewed in 2004 in the USA about his experience playing in Japan [1]
