Lew Lerner reached AAA despite being undrafted out of college.

Lerner had a school-record 1.25 ERA in 1970, winning All-American honors for NCAA Division II; the other pitcher chosen that year was Ken Watkins. Lew was 7-8 with a 2.68 ERA as a rookie for the 1972 Charlotte Twins. He led the Western Carolinas League with 194 strikeouts (in only 148 innings). He was second in ERA to Chuck Kniffin.

Assigned to the Lynchburg Twins for 1973, the right-hander had a 8-7, 3.63 record while his strikeout rate fell significantly (90 in 118 IP). He would have been 10th in the Carolina League in ERA had he qualified. For the 1974 Peninsula Pennants, he was 11-8 with a 4.70 ERA, walking 70 in 115 innings. He split 1975 between the Orlando Twins (2-2, 9 Sv, 3.21, 31 K, 17 H, 24 BB in 28 IP) and Tacoma Twins (2-2, 2 Sv, 2.93, 38 K, 29 BB in 46 IP), moving to the bullpen like other high-K, high-walk pitchers sometimes do. He ended his career with 13 games for Orlando in 1976 (1-1, 3.46, 17 BB in 26 IP).
