Biographical Information[edit]

The brother of big leaguer Ryan Sweeney, Kellen Sweeney has played in the minors.

He was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the second round of the 2010 amateur draft, between Drew Smyly and Andrelton Simmons at #69 overall. He was Toronto's sixth pick, following five pitchers in the first round. He signed for a $600,000 bonus. The scout was Wes Penick. He made his pro debut that summer with the GCL Blue Jays, hitting .267/.450/.444 with a home run and 7 RBIs in 16 games. Baseball America rated him as the #12 prospect in the Gulf Coast League, between Luke Bailey and Ramon Flores. He performed terribly with the 2011 Bluefield Blue Jays, going 4 for 35 with a double, 9 walks and 17 strikeouts.

Sweeney split 2012 between the Lansing Lugnuts (.179/.297/.207 in 43 G) and Vancouver Canadians (.229/.330/.367 in 67 G), with 48 runs and 41 RBI in 110 games, with 20 errors and a .930 fielding percentage at 3B. He began 2013 back at the A level with Lansing and was hitting only .196/.294/.311 after 45 games to bring his career batting line to an unimposing .206/.322/.310.
