Biographical Information[edit]

Jui-Chen Chen is a four-time Gold Glove infielder in the Chinese Professional Baseball League. His brother Jui-Chang Chen was a long-time teammate on the Brother Elephants.

Chen played in the 1988 Little League World Series, helping Taiwan win the title. He represented his homeland in the 1995 Asian Championship and 1995 Intercontinental Cup; in the latter event, he fielded .931 as Taiwan's shortstop and hit .176/.250/.176.

Chen began his pro career with the Elephants in 1998 and hit .259/.322/.324. In 1999, he batted .285/.344/.350 and stole 19 bases in 20 tries. He fielded .965 and won the CPBL Gold Glove award at second base. Chen hit .273/.360/.333 and swiped 13 bases in 16 attempts; he fielded .982 and won another Gold Glove at second base.

Chen switched to shortstop in 2001, flipping positions with Sheng-Hsien Feng. Chen hit .298/.372/.367 and stole 14 bases in 18 attempts in '01; he was named to the Best Ten at shortstop. In 2002, Jui-Chen produced at a .220/.308/.272 clip and fielded .965, winning a Gold Glove at short. He played for Taiwan in the 2002 Asian Games. During 2003, he hit .274/.377/.331 and won another Gold Glove after fielding .971. It was his last Gold Glove.

Chen batted .304/.364/.364 for the 2004 Elephants. In '05, the Chiayi native hit .256/.330/.304. For the Elephants in '06, he hit .310/.359/.359. In the 2007 CPBL, Jui-Chen improved to .322/.371/.378. In 2008, the 32-year-old hit .251/.329/.280. He became a player-coach in 2009, then a full-time manager in 2010. He guided the Elephants to the 2010 Taiwan Series title, a sweep of the Sinon Bulls, despite an overhauled roster with 15 players with no Taiwan Series experience. Chen became the youngest winning skipper in Taiwan Series annals. The team fell to 60-60 in 2011 and 53-57-10 in 2012 and Chen was canned.

Overall, Chen hit .282/.350/.339 with 1,034 hits, 129 doubles and 11 homers in 12 seasons in the CPBL.
