Biographical Information

Juan Grullón spent parts of two seasons in AAA.

He was signed by Texas Rangers scout Jesus Ovalle. He was 1-0 with a 3.12 ERA in his pro debut for the 2007 DSL Rangers. The next year, he improved to 6-1, 2.44 for the DSL Rangers 1, fanning 67 in 48 innings, though he walked 25. He came to the US in 2009, posting a 1-1, 3.51 record for the AZL Rangers. He split 2010 between the DSL Rangers (2-0, Sv, 0.79 in 5 G), AZL Rangers (1-0, 0 R in 9 IP) and Spokane Indians (0-3, 4.26).

Primarily a starter his first four seasons, he moved full-time to relief with the 2011 Spokane club, going 5-1 with a 3.11 ERA, though walks remained an issue (21 in 37 2/3 IP). He tied for 7th in the Northwest League in wins. Texas let him go. His next pro appearance, per BR register records, was with the 2014-2015 Águilas Cibaeñas, pitching 3 1/3 shutout innings. That earned him a return trip to the Rangers chain, after three years away. He split 2015 between the High Desert Mavericks (3-0, 2 Sv, 1.93, 35 K in 32 2/3 IP) and Frisco RoughRiders (1-3, 5.45 in 25 G). That winter, he pitched for both the Águilas (2-0, Sv, 2.70) and Tiburones de La Guaira (1 R in 1 IP).

In the summer of 2016, he appeared for Frisco (3-3, 3.48 in 22 G, 48 K in 41 1/3 IP) and the AAA Round Rock Express (0-4, 5.40 in 10 G). With the 2016-2017 Águilas, he was 1-0 with a 2.84 ERA in 22 games; a LOOGY, he only worked 12 2/3 IP. He tied Roberto Hernandez, Wirfin Obispo and Josh Judy for 5th in the Dominican Winter League in appearances. In the 2017 Caribbean Series, he struggled, allowing four runs (three earned) in 1 inning; he took the loss to the Tigres del Licey and Tiago Da Silva, giving up a RBI double to Ronny Cedeño and a two-run homer to René Reyes.

Back out of the minor leagues by 2017, he reprised his LOOGY role in winter ball (4 R, 1 ER in 11 IP over 20 G). In the 2018 Caribbean Series, he allowed three hits and one run in 1 1/3 IP. He spent the summer of '18 with the Guerreros de Oaxaca, going 2-0 with a save and a 4.66 ERA, but allowed 16 hits in 9 2/3 IP. He was 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in 3 2/3 IP over eight games for the 2018-2019 Águilas to end his career.

He had gone 23-16 with 3 saves and a 3.31 ERA in 142 minor league games (33 starts) and 5-2 with two saves and a 3.19 ERA in 90 winter league relief appearances.
