Biographical Information[edit]
Jovani Moran is a relief pitcher who made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins late in the 2021 season, pitching 5 games with no decisions and a 7.88 ERA. On September 13, 2022, he took over for another rookie, Joe Ryan, who had kept the Kansas City Royals hitless through 7 innings, but had reached his pitch count limit. He retired the Royals in order in the 8th and struck out Drew Waters to start the 9th, but then ran into trouble, walking Hunter Dozier and MJ Melendez before Bobby Witt Jr. ended the no-hit bid with a double. He also gave up a single to Sebastian Rivero and a sacrifice fly to Vinnie Pasquantino before striking out Nick Pratto to end the game, with the Twins winning, 6-3. He was a solid contributor out of the Twins' bullpen that season, going 0-1, 2.21 in 31 games and recording 1 save; he struck out 54 batters in 40 2/3 innings.
He played for the Puerto Rican national team in the World Baseball Classic, beating Johnny Cueto and the Dominican national team with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line. He had a 3.38 ERA in three appearances, striking out 5 in 2 2/3 IP; only José De León had more Ks for Puerto Rico. He pitched 43 times for the 2023 Twins and went 2-2, 5.31. His first career win came on June 21st against the Boston Red Sox when he pitched the 10th inning of a 5-4 win at home. He logged 42 1/3 innings, striking out 48 batters, but his final appearance was on August 5th, and he missed the postseason. He underwent Tommy John surgery after the season and missed all of 2024 as a result. On December 24th, he was traded to the Boston Red Sox in return for C/IF Mickey Gasper.
