Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Joshua Torres played in the minor leagues from 2012 to 2019, then continued to be active in the winter leagues after that. He was signed to his first pro contract as an undrafted free agent on June 14, 2012, after being passed over in the 2012 amateur draft, for which he was eligible as a resident of Puerto Rico.

He began his professional career with a couple of seasons with the DSL Brewers in 2012 and 2013, going 0-2 and 2-4, before moving to the U.S. in 2014 where he pitched for the AZL Brewers. He impressed by going 4-0, 1.92 in 14 games and in 2015 split his season between the Helena Brewers of the Pioneer League and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Midwest League. between the two stops, he went 5-8, 4.20 in 23 games, including 10 starts.

He was let go by the Brewers before the 2016 season, but got a second chance at organized baseball a year later when the New York Mets signed him as a free agent on December 17, 2016. he had not been inactive in the meantime, as he first pitched in the Puerto Rican League in 2014-15 with the Senadores de San Juan, and did so again every season after that. He was with the Tiburones de Aguadilla in 2016-17 when the Mets noticed him as he went 2-0, 2.96 in 21 games as a reliever. He spent 2017 with the St. Lucie Mets of the Florida State League, going 1-4, 3.14 with 4 saves in 41 games as a reliever, then in 2018 had a brilliant first few months with the Binghamton Rumble Ponies of the Eastern League, going 9-0, 1.19 in 35 games to earn a look in AAA with the Las Vegas 51s. He got lit up there, however, allowing 13 runs on 17 hits in 8 1/3 innings, but it was still a positive season. He then led the 2018-19 Puerto Rican League in saves with 10 while pitching for the Indios de Mayagüez. However, it was injuries that stalled his career in 2019, when he made just 21 appearances between Binghamton and the GCL Mets, the latter on a rehabilitation assignment, finishing at 2-2, 6.55. Following the season, he was part of a championship team with Mayagüez, which allowed him to play in the 2020 Caribbean Series.

And then the COVID-19 pandemic hit, and marginal prospects like him bore the brunt of the hit in professional baseball. He was on the roster of the Puerto Rican national team in the 2020 Americas Olympics Qualifier, before that event was rescheduled due to the pandemic. He had become a free agent after the 2019 season, but by the time minor league teams were again filling their ranks in 2021, he was deemed to old to warrant a contract, in spite of taking part in the 2021 Caribbean Series, this time with the Criollos de Caguas, following a season in which his ERA was 1.13. So he did not play in the minor leagues in either 2021 or 2022, and his 17 games with the Cangrejeros de Santurce in the 2021-2022 winter ball season were likely the final ones of his career.
