Biographical Information

Pitcher Josh Girdley was selected by the Montreal Expos in the first round of the 1999 amateur draft in what was widely seen as a signability pick. Girdley's career was beset by arm injuries which greatly limited his time on the mound and his success when playing. In his one full season in the minors, he went a solid 5-0, 2.95 with a 70/28 K/W ratio in 14 starts for the Vermont Expos in 2000. However, he only pitched 13 games over the next two seasons, all for the Clinton LumberKings, with an 0-5 record overall. In 2003, he was a bit healthier, starting 11 games for the Savannah Sand Gnats of the South Atlantic League, but his record of 2-5, 4.76, with 27 walks in 51 innings, was nothing to write home about. He followed that by going 0-3, 5.24 in 9 games for the Brevard County Manatees in 2004 and was released halfway through the season.

Girdley was part of a long string of Expos first round picks who did not pan out in the late 1990s-early 2000s. Others include Donnie Bridges, Josh McKinley, Josh Karp and Clint Everts. Even the one pick who did make it to the majors during that time frame, Justin Wayne, found little success. The string was broken when the Expos drafted Chad Cordero with their top pick in the 2003 amateur draft.
