Biographical Information

Pitcher Josh Karp was selected by the Montreal Expos in the first round of the 2001 amateur draft (6th overall). He was signed by scout Pat Puccinelli and made his pro debut the next summer. His selection at such a high rank was a bit of a surprise as he had been injured during his senior year at UCLA and there were doubts about whether he was fully recovered. However, he fit the profile of pitchers liked by GM Jim Beattie - tall right-handers - and his health status meant the cash-strapped Expos could sign him at a discount.

Karp began his career by going 4-1 with a 1.60 ERA for the Brevard County Manatees in the Florida State League in 2002 before posting a 7-5 record and a 3.83 ERA with the Harrisburg Senators that same year. However, he struggled with Harrisburgh in 2003, going 4-10 with an ERA of 4.98. He still moved up to the starting rotation of the AAA Edmonton Trappers in 2004 but posted an identical 4-10 mark and an ERA nearly a run higher, at 5.95. Karp split 2005 between Harrisburg and the New Orleans Zephyrs, going 5-6 with a 5.07 ERA between the two clubs. After that season, he had shoulder surgery, which effectively put an end to his status as a prospect.

He returned to professional baseball in 2009, starting two games for the independent Victoria Seals of the Golden Baseball League and going 0-1 with a 19.29 ERA.
