Biographical Information

Pitcher Josh Edgin made it to the majors in 2012.

Edgin was 4-2 with a 4.04 ERA as a college junior. The Atlanta Braves took him in the 50th round of the 2009 amateur draft - surprisingly, while the final Braves draftee that year, he would be the second 2009 Braves draftee to make the majors, after first-rounder Mike Minor. Josh was 6-4 with a 4.07 ERA as a senior. He was selected by the New York Mets in the 30th round of the 2010 amateur draft; the scout was Marlin McPhail. He would be the first 2010 Mets draft pick to make the big leagues. Edgin made his pro debut that summer with the Kingsport Mets, going 0-1 with 3 saves and a 2.84 ERA in 18 games, striking out 41 in 31 2/3 IP. Promoted to the Savannah Sand Gnats, he tossed three shutout innings and whiffed five more.

In 2011, the southpaw excelled for Savannah (1-0, 16 Sv, 0.87, .135 opponent average, 41 K in 31 IP) and the St. Lucie Mets (2-1, 11 Sv, 2.06, 35 K in 35 IP). He led Mets farmhands in saves. He began 2012 with the Binghamton Mets but was promoted after just six games (2 Sv, 1 R in 6 1/3 IP). With the Buffalo Bisons, he was less effective but still solid (3-2, Sv, 3.89, 40 K in 37 IP). He was then promoted to the majors after Dillon Gee went on the DL.

Edgin made his big league debut on July 13, 2012 against the Atlanta Braves, the first major leaguer from Francis Marion University. He entered in a sticky situation, replacing Miguel Batista with one out, the bases loaded and a 5-4 deficit in the 5th. He struck out Juan Francisco and Michael Bourn to escape that jam, then opened the 6th by retiring Martin Prado and Jason Heyward. He then faltered, giving up a home run to Chipper Jones and a double to Freddie Freeman before Ramon Ramirez relieved him. He stayed with the Mets for the remainder of the season, pitching 34 games with an ERA of 4.56 and a record of 1-2. He gave up only 19 hits and 10 walks in 25 2/3 innings while striking out 30 opponents, although 5 of the hits were homers.

Edgin compained of soreness in his elbow in spring training in 2015. An MRI showed ligament damage, leading to Tommy John surgery which cost him the entire season and leaving the team short of lefthanded pitchers.
