Biographical Information[edit]
Joe Dunigan spent considerable time in the outfield, at first base and as a designated hitter during his professional career, which spanned from 2007 to 2017.
He was originally taken by the Montreal Expos in the 41st round of the 2004 amateur draft, but opted not to sign. He did sign after being taken by the Seattle Mariners in the 5th round of the 2007 amateur draft, one pick ahead of pitcher Steve Cishek and in the same round as pitcher Jake Arrieta. He was signed by scout Dan Wright.
He exhibited a solid blend of power and speed early, hitting 14 home runs and stealing 28 bases for the Single-A Wisconsin Timber Rattlers in his second campaign. He followed that with a career year in 2009, hitting .294/.355/.570 with 30 home runs, 104 RBI, 20 stolen bases and 83 runs in 118 games for the High-A High Desert Mavericks. His performance earned him a spot in the semi-exclusive Arizona Fall League, where he hit .280/.349/.467 with 3 home runs and 14 RBI in 22 games for the Peoria Javelinas. In 2010, he slipped to a .225/.298/.392 line with 11 home runs, 47 RBI and 15 steals between three clubs and in 2011, his average was just .223, though he slugged 17 home runs. A resurgence in 2012 saw him hit .254/.320/.502 with 25 home runs, 72 RBI and 15 stolen bases in 115 games. He led the Southern League in strikeouts (175) that year, and was second in homers (behind Hunter Morris), extra base hits (53; tied with Justin Bour, behind Morris) and isolated power (.249; behind Morris). He played 38 games in 2013, 25 of which were at Triple-A. In his first and only taste of that level, he hit .193/.280/.375. He was cut loose following the 2013 campaign and latched on with the Washington Nationals, though he was released before the 2014 season began. He then joined the independent leagues. He had one last hurrah in 2014, hitting 28 home runs with 73 RBI and 10 steals between two clubs. He led the Can-Am League in homers (27), strikeouts (141) and isolated power (.263). After a couple more ho-hum seasons, he called it quits.
In the Mariners system, Dunigan hit .248/.316/.462 with 110 home runs, 375 RBI and 97 steals over 7 seasons. At all levels, including foreign and fall ball, he hit .247/.310/.458 with 167 home runs, 548 RBI and 127 stolen bases in 916 games. He earned numerous accolades and honors, including a California League Mid-Season All-Star selection in 2009, a California League Post-Season All-Star selection in 2009, a Topps Class A All-Star selection in 2009, a Southern League Mid-Season All-Star selection in 2012, a MiLB.com Organization All-Star selection in 2012, two Southern League Player of the Week selections in 2012 and a Can-Am League All-Star selection in 2014.
