Biographical Information[edit]

Joey Vreonis has been a minor league pitcher and college coach.

Vreonis was 1-1 with a 10.12 ERA for the 1996 Altoona Rail Kings. In 1997, he allowed 7 runs in one inning for the Regina Cyclones. A year later, he gave up 9 runs, 15 hits and 9 walks in 11 1/3 IP for the Rio Grande Valley White Wings. He later served as a coach for Los Medanos College, Freedom High School and Pittsburg High School. He coached for the Greek national team in the 2010 European Championship and 2011 Baseball World Cup. He came out of retirement to pitch for Greece in the 2012 European Championship. In his lone outing, he replaced Chris Kapothanasis in the 5th inning with a 6-0 lead against Spain. Daniel Figueroa reached on an error, then Franklin Tavarez doubled and Juan Salazar singled to make it 7-0. Vreonis retired Kelvin Feliz on a run-scoring double play then got Jesús Golindano on an inning-ending grounder. In the 7th, Andy Orfanakos relieved him.

From 2014-2019, he was head coach at his alma mater, Liberty High. He pitched once in the 2014 European Championship, relieving Orfanakos to close out a 15-3 loss to Spain. He allowed five hits, three walks and four runs (all earned) in three-and-a-third innings. His 10.80 ERA was not much worse than Greece's 9.41 team ERA. In the 2016 European Championship, he had a similar role to the prior two European Championships with one mop-up appearance, once again versus Spain. Relieving Jason Zachos with a 8-1 deficit and one aboard, he allowed a RBI double to MLB vet Engel Beltré and a RBI single to Jesús Golindano. Jesús Ustariz hit into a force then Yancarlo Franco doubled in two more before Eric Segura flew out to end it.

At the 2017 B-Level European Championship, he started against Austria and lost to Mo Hackl, allowing 7 runs (5 earned), 5 hits and 7 walks in 3 1/3 IP while fanning one; Peter Maestrales took over. in 2019, he became pitching coach of Diablo Valley College.
