Biographical Information[edit]

Jose Rojas played for eight seasons in the minor leagues.

Rojas began his career with the VSL Pirates. In three seasons as an outfielder for them, he hit only .167 with 18 RBI in 117 games, though he did steal 40 bases.

Let go by the Pittsburgh Pirates, Rojas signed with the Cincinnati Reds. In 2004, he was 4-2 with 9 saves and a 1.96 ERA for the VSL Reds. He tied for the Venezuelan Summer League lead in saves and was named the VSL All-Star relief pitcher.

Rojas was 2-4 with four saves and a 5.90 ERA for the 2005 Billings Mustangs. In 2006, he was excellent for the Dayton Dragons, going 3-1 with four saves and a 1.07 ERA in 25 outings; he also pitched 3 games for the GCL Reds. He struck out 68 batters in 44 2/3 IP and allowed a .190 average.

Rojas remained sharp in 2007. He pitched for Dayton (1-2, 11 Sv, 3.65, 53 K in 37 IP, .219 opponent average) and the Sarasota Reds (1-2, 4.32, 41 K in 33 1/3 IP, .242 opponent average). His 12.03 K/9 rate was fifth among all relievers in the affiliated minors.

Rojas was picked by the Oakland Athletics in the minor league section of the 2007 Rule V Draft that winter.

While he struck out 60 in 53 innings in 2008, Rojas struggled. He was 1-2 with a 6.17 ERA for the Stockton Ports and 2-2 with a save and a 5.44 ERA for the Midland Rockhounds. Control was an issue, as he walked 37.

Gone from the minors, Rojas was with Venezuela for the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
