Biographical Information[edit]

Jose Alguacil was a light-hitting minor league infielder with the San Francisco Giants (1993-1998) and Chicago White Sox (2000). He also played two seasons in the independent leagues, with the Sonoma County Crushers in 1999 and with the Newark Bears in 2001. He was a minor league coach with the GCL Expos in 2002 and 2003, then managed the Vermont Expos in 2004. He was the Washington Nationals' minor league infield coordinator in 2005 and returned to Vermont in 2006 as skipper of the Vermont Lake Monsters.

In 2011, Alguacil is the minor league defensive coordinator for the San Francisco Giants. He was widely credited for his work with Pablo Sandoval in that capacity. He was named a coach for the Spanish national team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, the only addition to the coaching staff after the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers.

In 2015, he was named manager of the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Giants' AA affiliate. In 2017 he was promoted to the parent Giants as first base coach. During spring training that year, on March 4th, he was hit in the face by a foul ball off the bat of Hunter Dozier of the Kansas City Royals. He suffered a broken nose, small fractures around his eye socket, and facial lacerations and had to undergo surgery. Still, he escaped with relatively minor damage given what could have been. He left his post after the 2019 season. He was scheduled to be manager of the Richmond Flying Squirrels in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to Covid-19.

In 2023, he was named infield coach of the Kansas City Royals.
