Biographical Information[edit]
Jose Alguacil was a light-hitting minor league infielder with the San Francisco Giants (1993-1998) and Chicago White Sox (2000). He also played two seasons in the independent leagues, with the Sonoma County Crushers in 1999 and with the Newark Bears in 2001.
Alguacil joined the coaching ranks in 2002 with the Montreal Expos organization. He was a minor league hitting coach with the GCL Expos in 2002 and 2003. Alguacil pulled double duty in two of the next three years. In 2004 he was named the Expos' minor league infield coordinator and also managed the Vermont Expos. Alguacil repeated as infield coordinator when the Expos moved to Washington D.C in 2005 and became the Washington Nationals. In 2006 he returned to Vermont as skipper of the Vermont Lake Monsters while once again serving as infield coordinator.
The San Francisco Giants hired Alguacil in 2007 as their minor league infield instructor and he stayed in that position through 2013. He was widely credited for his work with Pablo Sandoval in that capacity. Aguacil received a promotion in 2014 (at least on paper) when the Giants named him the team's Coordinator of Infield Instruction. He returned to managing in 2015 with the Richmond Flying Squirrels, the Giants' AA affiliate. The next year Alquacil moved another step closer to the major leagues as manager of the Sacramento River Cats.
In 2017 he was promoted to the parent Giants as first base coach. During spring training that year, on March 4th, he was hit in the face by a foul ball off the bat of Hunter Dozier of the Kansas City Royals. He suffered a broken nose, small fractures around his eye socket, and facial lacerations and had to undergo surgery. Still, he escaped with relatively minor damage given what could have been. He left his post after the 2019 season. He was scheduled to be manager of the Richmond Flying Squirrels in 2020 before the season was cancelled due to COVID-19. In his final season with the Giants, he did manage the Flying Squirrels in 2021.
Alguacil rejoined the Washington Nationals organization in 2022 as their minor league infield coordinator. He only stayed one season before he was named infield coach of the Kansas City Royals. Alguacil repeated this role in 2024 when the Royals surprisingly reached the playoffs after losing 106 games the previous year.
Alguacil also has considerable international coaching experience. He started in the Venezuelan League as the third base coach for the Navegantes del Magallanes in 2008/2009 and stayed in that role for the two subsequent seasons. In 2011/2012 he switched to the rival Bravos de Margarita in the same role and repeated that in 2012/2013. Alguacil was named a coach for the Spanish national team in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, the only addition to the coaching staff after the 2013 World Baseball Classic Qualifiers. After a few years away from the Venezuelan League, he returned in 2016/2017 as third base coach for the Cardenales de Lara and stayed there two seasons. In 2018/2019 he moved to a bench coaching position with the Leones del Caracas.
After many years coaching in Venezuela, Alguacil was hired to manage the Estrellas Orientales of the Dominican League on November 18, 2019 to replace the fired Fernando Tatis. Management was pleased with the team's turnaround under his leadership and brought him back as manager in 2020/2021. The next year, 2021/2022, Alguacil returned to Venezuela to manage the Leones del Caracas. He remains as manager into the 2024/2025 season.
