Biographical Information[edit]

José Calero pitched in the minors and for the Colombian national team.

He was 2-7 with a 6.39 ERA in his pro debut with the 2007 VSL Cardinals. He had the most losses and allowed the most runs (49) in the Venezuelan Summer League. Despite that, he moved up to the GCL Cardinals in '08, going 0-5 with a 4.81 ERA. He fell to 0-4, 9.95 with the 2009 GCL Cardinals, with a 2.05 WHIP to finish his minor league career at 2-16, 6.53 in 44 games (12 starts), allowing 136 hits and 50 walks in 102 innings while fanning 67.

Calero later pitched in the Colombian League and apparently attained Colombian citizenship as he was with the Colombian national team by 2019. In the 2019 Pan American Games Qualifier, he relieved Jaider Rocha in the 8th with a 4-3 lead against Nicaragua. He went 2 1/3 innings and allowed one hit but it was a homer by Elmer Reyes to tie it. Ezequiel Zabaleta relieved him and Colombia rallied to win. Colombia won a spot in the 2019 Pan American Games. In the 2019 Pan Am Games themselves, he got a crucial start in the opener against Cuba, the top team in Pan American Games baseball history. He did a great job, allowing one run in 6 1/3 IP (4 H, 1 BB, 4 K) before Ronald Ramírez relieved, to beat Cuba and Lázaro Blanco. That helped Colombia finish ahead of Cuba for the first time ever in the Pan American Games in baseball.
