José Avalos pitched in the minor leagues and for the Mexico national team.

Avalos began his professional career with the Guerreros de Oaxaca in 2002, and he was 1-1 with a 2.75 ERA and 3 saves in his first season. He then went 6-1 with a save and 3.15 ERA in 2003, and he represented Mexico in the 2003 Baseball World Cup. He was superb in his lone start, allowing two hits (to Weifeng Qu and Yijun Liu) and one walk (to Qu) in eight shutout innings to beat China's Li Zhang; Gabriel Alvarez closed it out. He tied Itsuro Tanimura, Mario Peña and Kasey Olenberger for the best ERA. In 2004, he went 4-1 with a 3.12 ERA.

The Chihuahua native slumped to 5-2 with a save and a 5.22 ERA in 2005, and his ERA rose to 8.00 in 29 appearances with 5 saves in 2006. He had a 6.00 ERA in 15 appearances for the Piratas de Campeche in 2007, then he went 1-1 with a 6.21 ERA in 2008. Avalos bounced back in 2009, and he was 3-4 with a 2.94 ERA with 2 saves in a team-high 48 appearances. He struggled again in 2010 as his ERA was 6.32 in 17 relief outings, then he had a 3.75 ERA in 34 games for the Pericos de Puebla. Avalos allowed 19 runs in 21 games for the Pericos in 2012, and he also pitched 9 games with a 12.38 ERA for the Petroleros de Minatitlan. That was his last season as a professional player. He had gone 27-16 with 13 saves in 371 games.
