Biographical Information

Mario Peña reached AAA.

Peña allowed two runs in two innings for the Nicaraguan national team in the 2001 Baseball World Cup then helped them win Gold at the 2001 Central American Games. Hemade his pro debut with the 2003 DSL Red Sox II, going 4-5 with a 1.93 ERA. In 75 innings, he struck out 70 and walked only four. He pitched for Nicaragua in the 2003 Baseball World Cup, going 2-0 with only one unearned run in 10 1/3 innings. The teenager tied for 4th in the event in wins and tied for the ERA lead. He had a 4-3, 3.94 record for the 2004 GCL Red Sox with just six walks in 48 innings. The left-hander remained sharp with his control in 2005, walking 10 in 82 innings for the Lowell Spinners. Mario went 6-8 with a 4.50 ERA. He tied for the New York-Penn League lead with 18 starts but also led in losses, hits allowed (97) and runs allowed (56).

He split 2006 between the [Spinners (4-1, 2.08), Greenville Drive (0-2, 6.89), Wilmington Blue Rocks (2.33) and Pawtucket Red Sox (0-1, 6.75). In 2007, the Managua native was 1-1 with a 12.21 ERA for the Lancaster JetHawks with a .422 opponent average.

Peña was a late addition to the Nicaraguan squad for the 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games.
