Biographical information

Jorge Alvarez played from 1988 to 2012.

He began his professional career in the Los Angeles Dodgers system, with the GCL Dodgers. For them, he hit .293 with no home runs and 24 RBI in 55 games. In 1989, he played for the Salem Dodgers, hitting .268 with six home runs and 22 stolen bases. With the Vero Beach Dodgers in 1990, he hit .289 with only one home run and 31 stolen bases in 124 games.

Alvarez played for the San Antonio Missions from 1991 to 1993. In 1990, he hit .298 with three home runs and nine stolen bases in 66 games. He hit .243 with five home runs and 32 RBI in 103 games in 1992, and in 1993 he hit .271 with four home runs and 34 RBI in 93 games.

He played in the Florida Marlins system in 1995 and joined the independent circuit the following year. In 1995, he played for the Portland Sea Dogs, hitting only .206 with an on-base percentage of .242 in 89 games (only 189 at-bats). He played for the Laredo Apaches and Amarillo Dillas of the Texas-Louisiana League in 1996, hitting a combined .343 with ten home runs in 95 games. In 1997 he played for Amarillo again, hitting .357 with 16 home runs, 10 stolen bases and 77 RBI in 99 games. Once again with Amarillo in 1998, he hit .395 with five home runs, 21 stolen bases and 68 RBI in 67 games.

Alvarez in Taiwan in 1998, hitting only .221 in 86 at-bats. He played for the Somerset Patriots of the Atlantic League in 1999, hitting .268 in 108 at-bats. Back with Amarillo in 2000, Alvarez hit .370 with six home runs in 37 games. He hit .342 with 13 home runs and 76 RBI in 84 games with Amarillo in 2001.

In 2002, Alvarez migrated to the Central League, where he played with the Alexandria Aces. That season, he hit .316 with a career-high 23 home runs and 105 RBI in 96 games. He was the Player of the Year that year. He played for the Shreveport Sports in 2003 and 2004, hitting .288 with nine home runs in 2003 and .312 with six home runs in 2004. He played in 95 games in both seasons. 2005 was his final season in the Central League - with the San Angelo Colts, he hit .342 with 14 home runs and 86 RBI in 92 games.

He moved to the American Association for the 2006 season, and has played with the El Paso Diablos since his move to the AA. He hit .330 in 2006, .352 with 91 RBI in 2007 (to earn Player of the Year honors) and .317 with 12 home runs in 2008. In 2009, he hit .319 in 96 games between the Diablos and Shreveport-Bossier Captains. In 2010, he hit .319 in 61 games for Shreveport-Bossier. After not playing in 2011, he returned briefly in 2012 to hit .071 in 14 at-bats for the Grand Prairie AirHogs.

Despite not hitting over .300 in any of the first seven years of his career, Alvarez put together a .313 batting average in 1,883 minor league games, excluding his time in Mexico. He also had 171 home runs. His 145 independent league home runs were a record among those ranks until Jesse Hoorelbeke broke the mark in 2011.

He made multiple All-Star teams in his career: 1997 (independent leagues), 2002 (Central League), 2006 (American Association) and 2007 (American Association).
