Biographical Information[edit]

Jong-bum Chae played in the Korea Baseball Organization for 8 years.

Chae was drafted by the Ssangbangwool Raiders in the 11th round of the 1996 KBO draft, and he decided to go to college first. He joined the SK Wyverns in 2000 (his rights were transferred to the Wyverns after the Raiders dissolved), and he hit .247/.311/.370 with 8 homers in his first season. Chae had a .255/.343/.354 batting line in 2001, and he represented South Korea in the 2001 Baseball World Cup. Their primary right fielder, he batted .280/.387/.320 with 3 runs and 3 RBI in 10 games, handling 13 putouts. He had his career year in 2002, and he crushed a career-high 17 homers with a.291/.374/.446 batting line. Chae slumped to .242/.292/.327 in 2003, then he played 104 games with a .293/.374/.436 batting line in 2004. He missed the next three seasons due to military service.

The Wyverns traded him with Seong-woo Lee and Hyeong-cheol Kim to the KIA Tigers for Byeong-doo Jun and Yeon-hun Kim in the middle of the 2008 season, and he ended up hitting .197/.270/.313 in 70 games. He missed the entire 2009 season due to knee injury, and he only played 29 games with a .234/.294/.390 batting line in 2010. Chae suffered from injuries in 2011 so he missed the entire season, then he announced his retirement.

He was the batting coach for the NC Dinos in 2012 and for the KIA Tigers in 2014. He became the minor league batting coach of KIA in 2015, and he was their assistant batting coach from 2016 to 2017. Chae returned to the batting coach spot of the Tigers in 2018, then he served as assistant coach of the Dinos from 2019 to 2021 and served as batting coach in 2022. He started to coach Bukyeong High School in 2023.

Overall, Chae hit .262/.337/.388 with 553 hits and 50 homers in 8 seasons in the KBO.
