Biographical Information[edit]
Outfielder Jonatan Clase was signed by the Seattle Mariners as an international amateur free agent out of the Dominican Republic on July 2, 2018. He made his professional debut one year later with the DSL Mariners where he hit .300/.434/.444 in 63 games. He then had to sit out the 2020 season when the minor leagues were shut down by the COVID-19 pandemic.
When he resumed playing in 2021, Jonatan played 14 games with the ACL Mariners, where he hit .245 with 2 homers and 10 RBIs. He resumed switch-hitting while rehabbing from an injury that year, something he had done before but had dropped a few years earlier. He finally got some extensive playing time in 2022 and made the most of it, batting .267/.374/.463 in 107 games for the Modesto Nuts of the California League. He hit 22 doubles, 11 triples and 13 homers, scored 91 runs and drove in 49 while stealing 55 bases in 65 attempts. He was named an organizational All-Star after the season. In 2023, he continued to progress, splitting the year between the Everett AquaSox of the Northwest League, and the Arkansas Travelers of the Texas League, for whom he saw the bulk of his playing time. In 129 games, he hit .242/.353/.449, with 102 runs and 68 RBIs, stole 79 bases (he got caught stealing 19 times), and had 28 doubles, 8 triples and 20 homers. He was named to play for the American League team at the 2023 Futures Game, held in what was his likely future home ballpark, Safeco Field, and was an organizational All-Star for the second straight year, in addition to being twice named the Player of the Week as well as the Player of the Month in April in the Northwest League.
He was added to the Mariners' 40-man roster following the 2023 season, and played for the Toros del Este in the Dominican League that winter. After starting the 2024 season in the minors, he was called up to make his debut on April 15th. Starting in left field against the Cincinnati Reds, he went 1 for 4 with an RBI in a 9-3 win. He played 19 games for Seattle, hitting .195. he went back-and-forth between AAA and Seattle a few times, being called up for a third time just before the All-Star break, but after going 2 for 7 in 4 games, he was one of two players traded to the Toronto Blue Jays in return for reliever Yimi Garcia (the other was minor league catcher Jacob Sharp). He hit .244 in 34 games with the AAA Buffalo Bisons, then was called up to Toronto on September 20th when Daulton Varsho, who had been playing CF until then, was placed on the injured list for the remainder of the season. He got a chance to make a few starts in the outfield over the final two weeks and on September 25th hit his first career home run, a two-run shot off Josh Winckowski in a 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.
