Biographical Information[edit]
Jon Lockwood pitched four seasons in the minor leagues. He will be with Canada for the 2008 Olympics.
Lockwood helped North Central Texas to the 2001 NJCAA Division I Baseball World Series title. He was 4-3 with a 3.79 ERA his last year of college and was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Mariners. He split his first professional season (2004) between the Everett AquaSox (4 BB, 1 R in 2 IP) and AZL Mariners (3-4, 6.97, 30 BB in 41 1/3 IP). He was second in the Arizona League in walks. In 2005, he made an amazing turnaround, going 2-0 for Everett with no runs, only 3 hits and one walk in 16 innings and striking out 19. He was moved up to the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers, where he had a 3-0, 3 save, 2.12 record in 15 games. In 29 2/3 innings, he fanned 43 and allowed just 18 hits, walking 14.
Jon spent all of 2006 with the Inland Empire 66ers, going 6-3 with a 3.87 ERA. He joined Team Canada for the COPABE Olympic qualifiers, allowing one run in 5 2/3 IP; Canada failed to qualify for Beijing but did move on to the final qualifiers scheduled for two years later.
In 2007, Lockwood struggled, going 0-3 with a 6.58 ERA in six starts for the High Desert Mavericks, ending his Organized Baseball career. He was back with Canada for the 2007 Baseball World Cup, throwing six scoreless innings in an easy win over the Thai national team. He allowed three runs (one earned) in 5 2/3 IP against the Australian national team as the starter in a 7-6 loss; he got a no-decision.
Lockwood was with Canada for the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament. He was ineffective against both the Mexican national team (2 R in 1 1/3 innings in relief in a 15-10 slugfest win) and the Taiwan national team (5 R in 6 IP; Canada rallied for a win in extra innings). Only James Avery had a higher ERA for Canada in the qualifier. Canada won to advance to the Beijing Games and Lockwood remained with the team for that event. Lockwood was 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA in the 2008 Olympics, doing well against the Dutch national team but allowing the game-losing homer to Alexander Mayeta against Cuba.
