John Jacob Quinn

Biographical Information[edit]

John Quinn worked in the front office of the Boston Red Sox from 1929 to 1935, where his father was General Manager. He had previously played baseball at Boston College under Hall of Famer Hugh Duffy but was not much of a hitter, precluding a career as a player. His first positions were quite lowly, as was a ticket seller and groundskeeper, before moving on to bigger responsibilities. He was secretary (1936-1946) and General Manager of the Boston/Milwaukee Braves (1946-1958) and then the GM of the Philadelphia Phillies (1959-1972).

His father, Bob Quinn, was a long-time baseball executive and also had been a Braves GM. His sons Bob E. Quinn and John Quinn Jr. became the first brothers to both win a Minor League Executive of the Year Award from The Sporting News. His daughters were Margo Quinn and Susan Quinn. His son-in-law, Roland Hemond, also went on to become a big league GM.
