Biographical Information[edit]

Catcher John Nathans was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2001. He subsequently spent four years in their minor league system, getting as far as AA ball, where he played two seasons for the Portland Sea Dogs.

He then moved onto the independent leagues, where he would play three more seasons.

On August 14, 2007, Nathans was involved in a very dangerous incident while playing for the Bridgeport Bluefish. His team was playing the Long Island Ducks. During the game, former major league All-Star José Offerman was hit by a pitch from Matt Beech. Offerman then charged the mound, bat still in hand. Not only did he breake Beech's finger, he hit Nathans on the head with the bat, which caused him a concussion and ended his career. Offerman was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and was subsequently sued by Nathans in February, 2009, seeking $4.8 million in damages.

The effects from the attack proved to be much worse than originally thought. Aside from the concussion, Nathans now copes inner ear damage, vertigo, headaches, post-concussion syndrome and near-complete hearing loss in his right ear. He cannot turn his head, look up or down, close his eyes or move suddenly without pain, imbalance or intensifying headaches.
