Biographical Information[edit]

John Hughes was pitching coach at the University of California, Berkeley from 1978-1990, working with Chuck Cary most notably. Berkeley made the 1980 College World Series and 1988 College World Series.

Hughes became a Montreal Expos scout in 1993, then moved to the Florida Marlins in 2002 when owner Jeffrey Loria took the entire Expos scouting staff with him when he purchased the Marlins. His signees have included Mark Canha, Scott Cousins, Bryan Evans, Brett Hayes and Josh Labandeira. He also recommended that the Expos draft high school catcher Tom Brady in 1995, but they were not able to convince the future NFL star to forgo a commitment to play quarterback at University of Michigan.
