Biographical Information[edit]

John Hicks was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the 31st round of the 2008 amateur draft but did not sign, opting to attend the University of Virginia instead. He was then taken by the Seattle Mariners in the fourth round of the 2011 amateur draft. He began his pro career that summer with the Clinton LumberKings, hitting .309 in 38 games. He was a California League All-Star with the High Desert Mavericks in 2012, posting a .312 average while hitting 15 home runs. He reached the majors with Seattle late in the 2015 season, going 2-for-32 in 17 games at the big league level.

After the 2015 season, Hicks was waived by the Mariners and claimed by the Minnesota Twins. He started 2016 with the Rochester Red Wings but was acquired by the Detroit Tigers in April. After spending most of the year in the minors, he earned a September call-up and made one appearance for the Tigers. After splitting 2017 between Detroit and the AAA Toledo Mud Hens, he spent the entire 2018 campaign with the Tigers, hitting .260 with 9 home runs. He posted a .210 average to go along with 15 homers in 2019 but became a free agent after that season.
