Biographical Information[edit]
John Hamill pitched for the Washington Nationals in 1884. He had success early in the year, beating Sam Kimber in a blowout. However, while Kimber went on to win 18 games, Hamill did not.
A brief mention from Sporting Life's Fall River, MA correspondent in the spring of 1884 indicated that Hamill came out of Fall River, which was at the time a great source for ballplayers. Since Hamill was not born there, presumably the correspondent meant that Hamill had pitched for an amateur team there prior to his pro career.
According to his obituary published in the Bristol Phoenix, he was "well known in the rubber business" having been at one time superintendent of the Chicago Rubber Clothing Company, and later occupied the position of chemist in the National India Rubber Company. He also spent time with the Liverpool Rubber Company in Liverpool, England. When he married Mary Ormand of Bristol in 1887, he was said to be living in Racine, WI.
The similarity scores method lists ten pitchers who also had low winning percentages - he went 2-17 in his lone season. However, Hamill's winning percentage is lower than any of them. Nevertheless, he did win more games than Terry Felton, who is not on the list.
