History, Comments, Contributions[edit]

The 1884 Washington Nationals were a dreadfully bad team that played in the American Association. They played just 63 games during the season, with a winning percentage of .190, the worst in the league, before dropping out after playing their last game on August 2nd. The Richmond Virginians then replaced them for the remainder of the schedule, playing a little better: their winning percentage was .261 in 46 games. The two teams were entirely separate with no overlap between the two rosters.

That year, a competing team, also known as the Washington Nationals also played in the Nation's Capital, in the fledgling Union Association, doing somewhat better as they finished with a record of 47-65. Neither team was back in 1885; instead, Washington fielded a team in the minor league Eastern League that year, before another Washington Nationals team began play in the National League in 1886.
