Washington Nationals (1886-1889)
Between 1886 and 1889, the Washington Nationals struggled to compete in the National League, finishing last in three out of four seasons.
The name of the Nationals was revived in 1905 by the Nation's capital American League franchise, but despite it being the team's official name until 1956, they were more commonly referred to as the Washington Senators. It wasn't until 2005 when the Montreal Expos relocated to Washington that the name Nationals was used again for a major league team - this time both officially and in common parlance.
