John was taken by the Chicago White Sox in the 26th round of the 1985 amateur draft but did not sign. Undrafted out of college, he signed with the Pale Hose and hit .213/.377/.319 for the 1989 GCL White Sox (stealing 7 bases in 8 tries). In 1990, Hairston batted .238/.336/.377 for the South Bend White Sox but only stole 8 bases in 18 tries. John Jr. split 1991 between South Bend (.198/.237/.291 in 24 G) and the Sarasota White Sox (.204/.302/.323 in 51 G). After a 4-year hiatus, he returned for one last try, with the 1996 Greensboro Bats. He did not impress with the bat (.216/.301/.330, 81 K in 194 AB) or glove (.901 fielding percentage) to end his career.
