Sam Hairston Jr. was the son of Sammy Hairston, the brother of Jerry Hairston Sr. and Johnny Hairston and the uncle of Jerry Hairston Jr., Jason Hairston, John Hairston Jr. and Scott Hairston. Hairston played one year in the minors, hitting .259/~.356/.343 for the 1966 GCL White Sox and scoring 35 runs in 46 games. He finished 10th in the Gulf Coast League in average, led in stolen bases (15 in 18 tries) and was second in runs, two behind Joe Pactwa. His .944 fielding percentage was 4th among the 10 second baseman to appear in at least 10 games. It was his only year in professional baseball.
