John Golez was a college coach for over 40 years.
Goelz was a pitcher in college. He was assistant coach at San Francisco State from 1977-1982. In 1984-1985, Goelz taught and coached baseball at Albany High School. He became head coach at Sonoma State University in 1986, taking the reigns at a school that had won 50 games in the prior six years. He turned things around, sending the school to its first winning record, 30-20 in 1987. He was named Northern California Athletic Conference Coach of the Year in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1998 and was California Collegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 2001, 2007 and 2008. His 2008 team set a school record of 52 wins and made the 2008 Division II College World Series, the school's first trip to the Series. He won 1,175 games in 39 seasons and had coached future big leaguers Scott Alexander, Daniel Barone, O'Koyea Dickson and Tommy Everidge. No Sonoma State coach in any sport had won as many games.
