Biographical Information

John Dobbs played five years in the majors and managed for many years in the minors.

Dobbs was in the majors from 1901-1905, appearing in at least 100 games each year. He primarily played center field, and his best season with the bat was 1902 when he hit .299, split between two National League teams. He played in the outfield with Sam Crawford on the 1902 Reds and was a teammate of Frank Chance, Johnny Evers and Joe Tinker on the Chicago Cubs of 1902 and 1903.

He was a minor league manager for 25 years between 1907 and 1933, mostly in the Southern Association. He managed the New Orleans Pelicans from 1914 to 1922, when he was replaced by Larry Gilbert. He also managed Nashville, Chattanooga, Montgomery, Memphis, Birmingham, and Atlanta, and also spent one year each in the South Atlantic League and the Piedmont League. Overall, his teams went 1,918-1,487, winning five Southern Association pennants.

In 1931, while skipper of the Atlanta Crackers, Dobbs was suspended for 30 days for striking an umpire.

At the time of his death, Dobbs was the co-owner of the Charlotte Hornets in the Piedmont League.
