Biographical Information[edit]
Jing-Yu Chang has pitched in the minors and for the Taiwanese national team. [1]
Chang was signed by the Seattle Mariners with a $720,000 signing bonus on July 16, 2018; the scout was Sam Kao. He made his professional debut on June 18, 2019 for the AZL Mariners. The young southpaw pitched 2 hitless innings and struck out 4. Chang ended up 0-3 with a 5.31 ERA, struck out 50 in his rookie year. After the minor leagues were shut down in 2020 due to the coronavirus, Chang struggled again in 2021 as his ERA was 7.84 in 10 games. He still couldn't leave the AZL in 2022, and this year his ERA improved to 3.79, but the Mariners still released him after this season. Chang then went to the Auckland Tuatara of the Australian Baseball League, but he allowed 9 runs in 5 innings.
The Wei-Chuan Dragons drafted Chang in the second round of the 2023 CPBL Draft, and he soon arrived to the big club. He pitched 8 1/3 innings with a 6.48 ERA in 2023. The Dragons still brought him into the 2023 Taiwan Series, in which Chang pitched one game. He relieved Hua-Wei Lo in the 5th inning in Game 5, and allowed a solo shot to Chien-Fu Liao. The Dragons beat the Rakuten Monkeys in 7 games, and he won his first Taiwan Series title.[2]
Chang then made it onto Taiwan's roster for the 2023 Asian Championship. He started against Palestine, pitched 3 perfect innings and struck out 7 of 9 batters he faced before giving way to Yu-Cheng Wu.[3]
