Biographical Information[edit]

Jin-woong Kim pitched in the KBO for 8 seasons.

Kim was drafted by the Samsung Lions in the first round of the 1998 KBO draft, and he was 3-4 with a 3.17 ERA in his first season. He joined the rotation in 1998, and he was 11-13 with a 5.40 ERA in 1999. He improved to 15-7 with a 4.93 ERA in 2000, and he was 5th in wins (between Denny Harriger and Jin-woo Song) and 5th in strikeouts (tied with Dae-sung Koo and Sang-duk Choi). Kim was moved to the bullpen in 2001, and he notched 12 saves with a 11-7 record in 43 appearances. He notched a save in 2001 Korean Series Game 1, but he surrendered 4 runs in the 3rd inning of Game 4 and got the loss. The Lions were beaten by the Doosan Bears in 6 games. He was 0-1 with a 0.90 ERA in the 2001 Baseball World Cup, losing to Miguel Gómez and Panama in the 5th/6th place game.

The Daegu native struggled in 2002 as his ERA was 6.97 in 18 games, and he went 9-11 with a 4.05 ERA in 2003. Kim then represented Korea in the 2003 Asian Championship, winning Bronze. He had a 9-7 record with a 4.32 ERA in 2004, and he pitched 6 innings with 3 runs allowed to get the win in the 2004 Korean Series Game 3. He only pitched 12 games in 2005, then he underwent Tommy John surgery and his season ended. Kim missed the next two years due to military service, but he never recovered from his injury. He struggled and stayed in the minors after returning, and the Lions released him in 2010.

Overall, Kim was 60-54 with a 4.59 ERA, collected 18 saves in 234 appearances and struck out 737 in 921 1/3 innings in 8 years in the KBO.
