Jim Garland worked for the Navy. After his retirement, he was a scout for 28 years, working for the Kansas City Royals (1970-1973) and Los Angeles Dodgers (1974-1998). He signed Sid Bream, Darren Holmes, Brian Holton, Wayne Kirby, Franklin Stubbs and Tracy Woodson. His son Jim Garland Jr. played in the minors in 1973.
