Biographical Information

Outfielder Jeff Jones had a tremendous season for the Cedar Rapids Reds of the Midwest League in 1982, when he hit .301/.426/.662, with 26 doubles, 42 homers, 111 runs scored and 101 RBIs. The 42 homers were a league record (which still stands), but he was not the league's Player of the Year, losing out to Tom Romano. Until then, he was only considered a marginal prospect, having hit a mere .181 in 48 games in his first taste of AA with the Waterbury Reds in 1981. The Cincinnati Reds, who had drafted him in the 20th round in 1979, decided to promote him all the way to the major leagues at the start of the 1983 season, but he hit only .227 in 16 games and was sent back to Waterbury at the end of April. He combined for 20 homers between Waterbury and the AAA Indianapolis Indians in 1983, but hit only .225.

He moved to the Chicago Cubs organization in 1984 and had a good season for the Midland Cubs of the Texas League, hitting .304 with 20 homers in 113 games, but he was still in AA in 1985, this time with the Pittsfield Cubs. He hit .196 in 31 games, ending his professional career.
