Biographical Information[edit]

Big lefty pitcher Jahseam George grew up on St. Thomas, where he played youth ball with Calvin Pickering and Kurt Wilkinson.

George moved to California in his teens. He was a "draft and follow" player who was selected three times before he finally turned pro. First, the Los Angeles Dodgers named him in the 39th round in 1997, one pick after Pete Orr, when he was in high school. The Dodgers kept tabs on him the following year, although he dipped to the 42nd round. Finally, after he enjoyed a strong season at San Jose State, the Cleveland Indians selected him in the 18th round.

George pitched in one game for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the short-season NY-Penn League and 15 others for the Burlington Indians in the Appalachian League. He was 2-2 with a save and a 4.93 ERA. In 34 2/3 innings as a pro, he struck out 32 but walked 17 and allowed 41 hits. His elbow bothered him and continued to bark after the season ended. The Indians released him in March 2003, but he was prepared for life after baseball, having earned his college degree.
