Biographical Information[edit]

Jae-yoon Hyun has been a catcher for the Samsung Lions. He debuted in 2002, going 5 for 22 with a homer. In '03, he was 9 for 54 with 4 walks and 2 doubles in 34 games. He had 210 AB in 77 games in 2004, hitting .214/~.260/.319. He was then one of 51 players found to have escaped military service by faking medical test results. As a result, Hyun did not play in 2005-2006, as he was forced to fulfill his military duties. Returning in 2007, Hyun was 0 for 2 with a walk in six games for the Lions.

He was with South Korea in the 2007 Baseball World Cup and went 4 for 10 as the backup catcher to San Song; he threw out the only runner who tried to steal against him. Hyun also was called on to pitch a game, something he had never done in the Korea Baseball Organization. He worked the final two innings of a 5-2 win over the Australian national team, allowing two hits and a walk and fanning two but giving up no runs and picking up the save to give Yong-hoon Cho the victory. It was not an easy save. In the 9th, he gave up hits to Trent Oeltjen and Glenn Williams and walked Ben Risinger, loading the bases with two out. Michael Collins almost gave Australia the game by hitting a long fly to left but it wasn't far enough and Ji-wan Na caught it to end the contest.

In the 2008 KBO, Hyun hit .248/~.282/.376 in 67 games and 125 AB.
